VTs Visit Kathryn (Harbour) Eccleston
While we all enjoyed the reunion, there definitely was not enough time to visit with everyone and to
catch up on life for these past 50 years. When I heard a name from the our class my mind would picture
what we looked like when we were 18. Filling in the gaps would take more time. I ran into Kathryn
(Harbour) Eccleston at the evening dinner and in our short conversation I found out two things that I
didn’t know before. One is we both live in Colorado. Kathryn lives in Ft Collins, Colorado and Renee and
I live in Monument, Colorado in the summers. The second thing we both found out is we like bluegrass
music. I knew then and there that Kathryn was my kind of person. So at the reunion we made a
promise to each other to get together in Colorado. We made that happen over the Christmas break.
The weather was really cold, below freezing, but we didn’t let that get in the way. A very hospitable
Kathryn invited us up to her home, so Renee and I drove to Ft Collins. Kathryn’s lovely home is in the
foothills near Horsetooth Reservoir. This is truly one of Colorado’s more beautiful areas and Kathryn
gets to live there all year round. We couldn’t go hiking (Texans have thin blood), so we spent many
hours drinking tea and catching up. After the usual obligatory discussions of aliments (yes we are old), it
was fun to talk about the paths our lives have taken and some of the fond memories from our days at
South Hunterdon. Renee didn’t seem bored with our stories and learned a few more things about me
and my past. We all talked for hours and then went to dinner at Nicks Italian Restaurant in Ft Collins for
one of the area’s best hamburgers (yes its true, that is one of their specialties). After dinner, we said our
goodbyes and started for home. Things were great until the snowstorm started south of Denver. In
spite of the snow, it was an excellent time and we hope to make a bluegrass connection with Kathryn
this summer as Colorado has more (and better) bluegrass than Texas.
